Map vs. Territory

Finding Ground Truth

Decisions take longer than they should. The same person keeps becoming a bottleneck. New hires spend their first month quietly asking, "wait, is that actually how we do this?" People are having the real conversation in the parking lot instead of the meeting room.

None of that means your organization is broken. It usually means two things have drifted apart: the map (your org chart, your mission statement, your written policies) and the territory (who actually has influence, what actually gets rewarded, how work actually gets done).

What Does "Ground Truth" Mean?

Ground truth is a term borrowed from cartography and satellite mapping. It is the information gathered by someone physically on location, used to check whether a map or a model is actually right. A satellite image might show a green field. Ground truth is what a person standing in that field finds when they get there, and sometimes it matches the image, and sometimes it does not.

This course teaches you and your team to find your organization's ground truth: what is actually happening in your decisions, your communication, and your daily work, checked in person rather than assumed from an org chart or a policy manual. Your map might be accurate. It might not be. You will not know until you check.

This course gives your leadership team a structured way to go find that ground truth on purpose, on a schedule, instead of discovering the gap the hard way during a crisis. It is the same framework behind the half day live workshop, built so you can run it yourselves, on your own timeline, as many times as you need it.

What You Will Learn

Across nine short video lessons, you and your team will:

  • Understand the three domains where map and territory drift apart: Structure, Communication, and Systems
  • Learn how to ask honest, revealing questions in one-on-one conversations before a group discussion
  • Diagnose whether a gap comes from an outdated map, a territory that has drifted, or both
  • Prioritize what actually needs attention now, in 90 days, or just needs monitoring
  • Build a concrete, seven-part action plan for every high-priority gap you find
  • Recognize the red flags that mean a situation needs outside help, not just a worksheet

Who This Is For

Executive directors, operations leads, and founders who sense friction or confusion but cannot quite name where it is coming from, and who want their leadership team to have this conversation without hiring outside help every time.

This is a real working session for your team, not a five-minute read. Budget an hour or two of video, plus real working time on the worksheets.

About Your Instructor

Melissa Pierce is a fractional Chief of Staff and Operations Officer who has spent two decades combining a background in documentary filmmaking with operational leadership. Finding ground truth is what she has always done, first as an interviewer listening for what a story was actually about beneath what people said on camera, now as an operator listening for what an organization actually values beneath its official story. This course teaches you and your team to do that same kind of listening for yourselves.
